Why Can’t I Stop Overthinking? A Teen’s Guide to Feeling Calmer

why can't I stop overthinking at night?

Found this page on your own? Maybe a friend mentioned it. Maybe you were up at 1am googling “why can’t I stop overthinking?” — either way, you’re here, and that already says something good about you. It means part of you is looking for a way to feel better, even if the rest of you isn’t totally sure about that yet.

So let’s just talk honestly for a second.

This Isn’t What You’re Picturing

If the word “hypnotherapy” makes you think of stage shows or someone controlling your mind — that’s not this, at all. Think of it more like a really focused, really relaxed state, kind of like the feeling right before you fall asleep, where your mind is calmer and more open to letting go of stuff it’s been gripping onto. You’re aware the whole time. Nothing happens without you.

EFT tapping is even simpler — it’s literally tapping on a few specific points while naming what’s bothering you. It sounds almost too easy. A lot of people are surprised by how much it actually helps.

So Why Can’t You Stop Overthinking?

Here’s the actual explanation, not just reassurance: when your nervous system senses stress — school pressure, a fight with a friend, something you can’t stop replaying — it shifts into a kind of alert mode. Your brain starts scanning for problems to solve, over and over, because some part of it thinks that’s how it’s keeping you safe.

The problem is, that scanning doesn’t always turn off on its own. It can keep running long after the actual stress is gone, which is why you can be lying in bed, nothing wrong in the moment, and still feel like your mind won’t quiet down.

This is really common, and it’s not a sign that something’s wrong with you. It just means your nervous system learned to stay “on” — and the tools I use are specifically about teaching it how to actually switch off again, not just distract you until the thoughts come back. And once your nervous system learns that off-switch, it tends to stick — you’re not just getting through tonight, you’re building a skill you’ll have for good.

You’re Not Broken, and You’re Not Overreacting

Racing thoughts. Feeling wound up for no clear reason. Dreading things that shouldn’t feel this big. (If it’s specifically bedtime that’s the hardest part, this post on why sleep gets so hard might hit close to home too.) This is really common, and it’s not a sign that something’s wrong with you right now.

What Actually Happens in a Session

You talk. You’re heard. And then we work with tools — breathing, tapping, visualization, calming techniques — that help your body actually let go of some of what it’s been carrying, instead of just talking about it on repeat.

You’re never pushed to share more than you’re ready to. This works best when you actually want to be there, not when you’re forced into it.

About Privacy

What you share stays between us. The only exception is if I ever have a real safety concern — and even then, I’d talk to you about it first. This is your space.

What to Do Next

You don’t have to decide anything right now. If this feels like something you want to explore, you could:

  • Show this page to a parent and let them know you’re open to trying it
  • Ask them to book a free discovery call, or ask if you can be part of that conversation
  • Just sit with it for a while — there’s no deadline here

Whatever pace you need is the right one.
